The thing that brought me to this project was hearing Edie’s voice for the first time—she was so much the opposite of what I might have expected. What did I expect? That a woman who was so beautiful, ethereal, stylish, famous mostly for how she walked into a room, might not have much to say? Here she was, full of insight, smarts and with a great dark sense of humor. Speaking in a voice that felt immediate, personal, intimate, right there, as though she had made them yesterday. She made the Ciao Tapes in what turned out to be the last two years of her life, yet at that moment in 1970, she was ready to tell her story, and to move on to the next chapter. She felt she had learned a lot and was ready to go on living. To me they are haunting and powerful.
So from the very beginning with this book and documentary film the thought was: Edie speaks. She has something to say. Let’s listen. It was with pleasure and anticipation that we prepared for the public program at the HAMMER museum, ready to unveil for the first time some of what we have been working on as we marry her voice to her image. And people came. Standing room only. To watch an audience watching her, and listening to her voice, and being as moved by it as I first was - that was fantastic. I have felt Edie’s presence strongly only a few times on this project, but that night, getting ready to do that presentation, watching slides of some of her prettiest photos on the walls, I could feel that she was there. Ready for an audience.
The New York event was just a party, glamorous and fancy at the Gramercy Park Hotel, thrown by Interview Magazine and Gucci, hosted by Jane Holzer and Paz de la Huerta, where Factory people turned out as well as some of New York’s finest to toast Edie. Vera Farmiga, James Gandolfini, Kate Bosworth, Sandra Brant, Ingrid Sischy, Vanessa Carlton, Helena Christensen, Elvis Mitchell, Zac Posen, and Paul Schrader were there. So were Danny Fields, Fred Eberstadt, Bibbe Hansen, Jay Johnson, and John Palmer. From the Warhol Museum Geralyn Huxley and Matt Wrbican, and Steven Watson who wrote Factory Made. It was a wonderful night.
We are so excited that the book is out in the world, and looking forward to the film being finished, in order to share her story with people. In the meantime keep visiting, we will keep you updated as our discoveries unfold.

ahh! i can’t believe i missed the hammer event. blasted LA traffic, by the time we got there it was a full house. anyway i’m glad it was a success, and i love your philosphy on edie. she deserves the credit.
Hearing those tapes at the Hammer presentation was so amazing… There is something so different about hearing a voice- so present. I love the idea that your project is about letting Edie speak, and I think that she has a lot to teach us. I am so happy that the cd is included with the book. I agree that I especially love the tape with her and Warhol talking- cause it shows how much she was totally not just sitting back and going for the ride, but was actively involved in everything that she did and made.
I am so glad I got into the hammer event at the last second- it was really incredible to hear David Weisman and John Palmer speak about their personal experiences with Edie and the videos were amazing! It makes me so happy that Edie is finally being recognized as an artist with a program at a museum!
Are there many other tapes with Andy and Edie talking?
I am proud to be from the South, but when everything about Edie is going on in LA and NY….I want to live there!! I feel like I am a huge Edie supporter and I am always so upset to miss these things. But I did see the Hammer Museum event on line and thought it was amazing!!! I cannot wait for the documentory. Is there a tenative release date yet. I already finished the book!!!
